Yosemite by Lois Kershner

On my first visit into Yosemite I remember going through the tree lined avenue into the wide canyon valley carved by the glacier. I had seen many pictures of Yosemite valley, but it was not until we got out of the car and looked around that I could only begin to get a sense of the awesome magnificence surrounding me. Even now after several visits I don’t fully comprehend what I am seeing. I feel the need to return again and again in different seasons of the year to appreciate this natural wonder.

My latest visit was in the fall when the much of the meadow grass had become a golden color and a few leaves had turned rusty red/orange. I chose to select several scenes for my canvas embroidery interpretation since there are too many aspects of this special place to capture in a single scene.

An enjoyment and appreciation of the beauty of nature and natural forms is the motivating inspiration behind my designs. Essentially I paint with thread, creating the illusion of light, shadow, perspective, and texture through thread and stitch selection and placement. I use canvas embroidery to record memorable places and experiences much as other use travel journals, photo albums or sketch books.
