Precious Plumes by Rachel Watkins

The Snowy Egret is the smallest of the Herons and is identified by its black beak, black legs and yellow feet. These birds live in the wetlands on the east coast of the Americas and build a platform-like nest in low trees or bushes. Their diet consists of small fish, insects and amphibians.

At one time the beautiful plumes of the Snowy Egret were in great demand for womens’ hats. This reduced the population of the species to dangerously low levels.

My embroidery incorporates the environment where these birds live into a stylized design utilizing Japanese Embroidery materials and techniques.
