Naoshima Sunset by Lois Kershner
Several days on a trip to Japan in 2007 were spent on Naoshima Island where our small artistic journey group of travelers explored the town’s artist shops and galleries. Just after getting settled in our yurts located just a few steps from the ocean, we were mesmerized as we watched the calm, colorful beauty of the sun’s reflection against clouds and water as it slowly dipped below the horizon.
I chose to have my photograph play a primary role in my stitched interpretation of this special scene. By transferring the photograph to canvas, I transformed it into a stitched work of art. “Light” stitches were selected to expose the magnificent sunset image. Stitches giving full canvas coverage for the hills, ocean and beach were selected to achieve a sense of direction, depth, dimension. In addition to the choice of stitches, thread colors and textures were selected to create a sense of perspective.
