Poem Papers by Paula Lee Krause
Shikishi (poem papers) are traditionally small square or rectangular sheets of cardboard-backed paper. Poems are brushed in ink on the decorated papers and attached to trees or byobu (Japanese screens) for inspection and contemplation.
“Poem Papers” is a challenge design from the Japanese Embroidery Center. It is stitched on silver nishijin using silk and metal threads. The degree of difficulty of this piece stems from the intricate embroidery on top of the laid foundation of the poem papers.
