Perfect Forest by Judy Kotick

“The Perfect Forest”, a class by Catherine Jordan, taught the technique of contemporary drawn thread to create a three-dimensional forest. By withdrawing the weft threads and reweaving them into the side margin, we created an area of warp threads with a finished border. We then manipulated the warp threads to create foreground and background trees of varying sizes with assorted side branches and trunks. We were free to choose our own colors of browns for the trees and greens for the foliage above the trunks. I have a beautiful birch tree in my front yard; so my forest had to include a birch tree. I embroidered flowers, grass and a bush as the floor of my forest and used a painted foam-core background behind my forest for depth. I enjoyed this class because of the creativity involved; the trees and foliage, the forest floor and the background.
