Oro Prieto by Joetta Melton

Jim Wurth taught his intriguingly diverse design “Study in Gold and Silver” (photo attached) through the Shining Needle Society in 2008. While his original uses bright golds, silvers and whites on an eggshell ground, this design spoke to me of murky darkness and panning for gold. As a child living in Brazil, I had the opportunity to pan for gold in Oro Prieto (Black Gold), and saw the beauty of gold nuggets in the center of the pan surrounded by a ring of black hematite that always accompanies gold. To capture this feeling, I changed Jim's color scheme to antique golds/coppers, pewters and ecru on a black ground, but using the same fibers he used.
