My Friend by Marla Frazier

My dearest friend and I are horn players. His favorite solo piece is the Beethoven “Horn Sonata”. One day I was looking through a greeting card catalog and a card had this quote from Beethoven: “Never shall I forget the days which I spent with you… continue to be my friend, as you will always find me yours”. I knew that I had a great design.

I drew the sheet music for the “Horn Sonata” onto graph paper, then overlaid the graph of a hunting horn. Over this I added the quote. Then I drew ever larger free-form shapes around this center motif to arrive at the guidelines for shading of the background music from light to dark. I stitched the piece in a combination of counted cross and straight stitches, which work wonderfully for creating musical notes. I intentionally framed this piece very simply.
