Golden Gingko Kimono by Toni Gerdes

Golden Gingko Kimono is a beautiful kimono which shows the seasonal changes of a Ginkgo tree expressed with silk, metals, and an interesting “Hot Gold Foil Pen” technique on congress cloth. This gold foil is under the stitching on each leaf. I was inspired to make this kimono after watching the seasonal changes of the Ginkgo tree in my neighbors’ yard. I photocopied real leaves to get the exact shape of a real leaf. The piece incorporates a wonderful blackwork lantern pattern, along with, a new over-shading technique. The leaves show the changes in color from Spring to Fall, while the blackwork represents the branches of winter. The flowers in the upper left show the budding of the tree in spring. To finish the kimono, I designed my own signature seal, sometimes called a “chop”.
