Beach Walk by Joetta Melton

This was a ANG 2008 class project (photo attached), designed and taught by Linda K. Reinmiller. Students had a choice of four ground colors, and the first day was spent discussing color theory. Each student then chose an overdyed fiber and multiple colors of perle cotton, floss, metallics and metallic sewing threads. Ms. Reinmiller gave instruction on stitches, but color choices and placement were entirely up to the student. I chose Gloriana “Highland Garden” as my base, adding sand beiges so that the upper left and lower right squares could be dunes and sand dollars instead of waves and horseshoe crabs. In addition, the jellyfish in the upper right square were made of small balls of Angelina ironed between sheets of paper, causing the fibers to coalesce and change color. Needlewrapping and needle weaving were randomly placed, as were the sky and sand stitches behind the seagulls.
