And You Were There by Diane Herrmann

“And you were there…and you…and you…and you” are words Dorothy uses as she wakes from her tornado-induced dream. When I thought about hats, I thought of M. C. Escher’s sketch of the hat tessellation from the Alhambra, and wanted to stitch that design. This piece features a tessellation of hats from the Wizard of Oz, I used four hats from the Wizard of Oz (Wicked Witch of the East, the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, and Good Witch Glinda) to make the repeats. Witch and scarecrow hats are stitched in Neon Rays, pearl cotton, wool, beads and pearls, and stranded cotton, the tin hats are appliquéd satin, and the yellow bricks surrounding the design are in silk. The pillow is, of course, emerald green.
