Stars for the New Millenium by Lisa Rohlf

In choosing “Stars for a New Millennium,” I selected a piece that combines color, texture, stitch and thread in a way that exhibits a wide variety of patterns and color combinations. Originally designed by Tony Minieri, each square is based upon a traditional star quilt pattern, with each named after a “star” of motion pictures. I created my unique piece through the allowed use of alternate colors and thread choices.

I began by deciding on a southwest color palette and selected an overdyed silk thread with four different color families, dominated by rust and turquoise values. For the inner sashing I selected Au ver à Soie 133, which was also to be used as the interior row of the outer border. When a change in dye lot for A133 occurred, I resolved the problem by re-aligning the rows of the outer border utilizing alternate colors and threads.

The piece hangs on our entry room wall, greeting all who enter with its southwest spirit.
