Postcards from Paradise -- Greece by Gail Sirna
A trip to Greece is on any avid traveler's agenda. After all, this
is the cradle of western civilization an of democracy, two
institutions so significant to those of us in the West. So it was
with great enthusiasm that we journeyed to Greece a few years ago.
And so many impressions and images remain with us.
The mainland of Greece is dotted with ancient ruins, from the
magnificent Parthenon to the mystical Oracle at Delphi and the
evocative ruins of Phillipi. One can scarcely travel 10 miles
without coming upon more reminders of our ancestors.
And then there are the famous Greek islands, so many, so lovely, so
appealing. Many are crowded with characteristic Greek architecture,
the white buildings with the blue domes; they cover the hillsides and
delight the eye.
My postcard is a melange of images I brought home from Greece: the
Temple from Delphi, a typical island building with the very blue
dome, and towering over all: Mount Olympus. The entire scene is
embraced by the bluest of Grecian skies. I further embellished the
post card with a stamp, but mine is a Greek icon, all gold and
depicting the Virgin Mary. These works of art are ubiquitous
throughout the country. Surrounding the entire design is a Greek
key border.
