Poor Butterfly by Linda Lee Mucha
While visiting the Day Butterfly Center at Callaway Gardens in 2007, the brilliant colors of the butterflies flitting around my head was captivating. As I walked, I noted the short, fluid life of one of the inhabitants as it ended. This led me to thoughts of a child in a garden finding a portion of a butterfly wing. Upon that premise, I designed this piece.
Toward the end of the lovely garden path in the Day Butterfly Center one visits with the Macaws. The combination of one of the bird’s lustrous plumes became the inspiration for the color pallette.
Combined within the piece is a variety of threads and embellished wool. All of these elements are hand stitched on water-soluble facing that was washed away. I chose to mount the piece with pins holding it in place as though it were a specimen saved for posterity.
