Mystique by Toni Gerdes

This third design in the Baroque-Rococo series by Jean Hilton was a fun class taught by Maryann Juergensen at Two the Point Needlearts in Overland Park, Kansas.

I was strongly attracted to the southwestern colors in this design. The copper metallic and the black metallic together with the more traditional southwest colors of peach and turquoise seem to grab the viewer and pull you into the art.

One definition of the word “mystique” is an “atmosphere of mystery”. I felt that mystery, as the squares and diamonds in this design wove themselves in and out. The combination of straight lines and swirls in the piece move the eye around the canvas to follow the colors and “frames” to see where they will go next. The surprising “poison” colors of bright yellow and rose really make the finished design an eye-catcher.
