Rose Trellis Purse by Carol Pederson

At a needlework retreat, I took Diane Clements' class making a Reticello and counted thread evening bag. I so enjoyed the project that I decided to design my own handbag - this is the result. The rose is my favorite Hardanger motif, and I had a length of upholstery fringe with copper rose beads (One does eventually find a use for these treasures.) Roses grow on trellises, which suggested the basic design.

The purse is stitched on 30-count linen using Perle cotton and Kreinik metallic fibers. The trellis uses pulled thread stitches. I added seed beads and bugle beads to the copper rose beads for the inserts at the top and for the fringe. Both sides are identical. The purse is lined with Dupioni silk; I added a zippered compartment to the lining. It has a magnetic snap closure and is finished with a twisted cord shoulder strap of Perle cotton and metallic fiber.
