Iris Collage by Jones Corrine

This class piece was an education in a variety of techniques. It also required continuous decision making by the student.

Beginning with the technique of transfer painting, it was the student's vision that determined "where" and "how much". Step two was the application of Japanese rice paper, known generically as lace paper. After the gold leaf was in place the stitcher was now ready to focus on the shading of the iris petals using Soie D' Alger silk. Silk was also used on the leaves in a fishbone stitch. Satin stitch was used on the stems. The butterfly is worked in an open buttonhole stitch with gold Madeira added in tent stitch.

The challenges presented in this beautiful design were very much enjoyed; the end result was very satisfying.
