Creation Resolution by Michael Gravely
This piece came about as I struggled with the Fundamentalist view of creation. As I wrestled, I realized I could not agree; however, that left me floundering with no belief. As I worked out my theory, I worked out this piece. It consists of many levels, each denoting the continuation of the 'Laws of Nature' as delineated in the first level of the piece. Notice that it is very geometric and tight and represents the order that God created in order for the rest of the world to develop. The sea begins to teem with life, the earth with life, the sky begins to shine, land masses form and move. Lightness and darkness are both present; our free will in action. The whole piece arises from tears in the black fabric of time.
I used metal grids as the base for each level – again referencing the basic order underlying all of creation. Silk fabric was used to give height and bulk to various areas. Silk thread and beads were used throughout the piece to provide embellishment, color and texture. I also incorporated copper wire in places as well as gold and silver metallic threads, purls and beads. This piece was a struggle internally, but at the same time, cathartic. It helped give me an understanding of my dilemma in both a visual and physical context.
