Copper Leaf by Madlain Yunkers

This piece was completed in 2001, following the EGA seminar in Danvers, MA. The object was to design a Blackwork piece using any shape leaf, as found on the ground.

I do not recall the name of this leaf, but it being early Fall, I decided to execute it in shades of copper, using Kreinik metallics and DMC cotton. The procedure for creating the design was to make a "Xerox" copy of the leaf, thus obtaining a good gray-scale rendition. The basis for my stitching pattern was a series of hearts joined on the diagonal, with a different pattern used in the lower, and horizontal, section of the leaf, in accordance with its veins.

As for the name of this piece, I call it Copper Leaf and have incorporated the word "Fall" in four languages (English, Spanish, German, and French) to create an internal border. Also, the black 18 ct. Aida cloth, has been textured in the interior of the border to create a certain amount of movement.

This piece did travel for two years as part of EGA's 17th Annual Travelling Exhibit.
