The Twins by Rachel Watkins

Giraffes are silent, unique creatures with a dignity of life that deserves to be protected. My giraffes were first padded with felt and string and then gold and silver metallic leather was stitched into place. Gold and Silver Passing Thread was couched over the remaining area. I used Pearl Purl, Check Purl and various other gold work techniques to create texture and depth. The ears were stitched separately on felt and were attached as stump work.

In my study of giraffes, I learned that they live in partnership with Tickbirds. These tiny birds eat parasites that accumulate on the belly of the giraffe. When not feeding, Tickbirds perch on the backs and heads of these gentle giants.

Not long after I had started this piece I found out that my daughter-in-law and son were expected twins. I completed the project during the pregnancy and gave it to them as a gift.
