The Roadrunner by Beve S. Handwerger

The line drawing of a 3 year old said “Roadrunner” to me. Roadrunners run on roads, and even though they are only seen in the Southwest, artistic license put this roadrunner in a Maine blueberry field in the fall. Symbolically the fall of the year in Maine begins my year and the 3 year old is my granddaughter.

My work usually develops spontaneously over an extended period of time in which to think it through, change it, experiment with it….in my mind. Fabric, materials, textures are often the motivation. Once defined I begin pulling materials, following the concept work out in my mind, knowing it may need changes, as the work itself takes over and dictates direction. The piece grows, much like watching a child grow. With an emotional theme, I will experiment with concepts, design and materials on paper….sketchbook. I need to work it through where it visually takes shape.
