Postcards from Taos by Beve S. Handwerger

This is a collection in postcard form of the sights, sounds, colors and textures of Taos and the surrounding areas in New Mexico. The mountains….regal; the desert….stark; the sky….brilliant, neverending; the Rio Grande….majestic; art galleries and museums….full of beautiful work to fill the mind and inspire the senses. The Pueblos….full of yesterday but very much today….with traditions we can only imagine.

My work usually develops spontaneously over an extended period of time in which to think it through, change it, experiment with it….in my mind. Fabric, materials, textures are often the motivation. Once defined I begin pulling materials, following the concept work out in my mind, knowing it may need changes, as the work itself takes over and dictates direction. The piece grows, much like watching a child grow. With an emotional theme, I will experiment with concepts, design and materials on paper….sketchbook. I need to work it through where it visually takes shape.
