Elizabethan Embroidery by Audrey Melton

“Elizabethan Embroidery” is a silk and metal panel designed and taught by Jane D. Zimmerman. The design was executed on a #32 linen of even but not open weave in 15 values of Needlepoint Inc. silk, #14 gilt paillettes and Kreinik’s gold Japan Braid #4 and #8. Stitches used: Plaited Braid, Chain, Back, Satin, Bullion, Outline, Open Ceylon—Overcast, Open Ceylon—Woven, Woven Web, Blanket, Trellis, Basic Detached Buttonhole with Straight Return, Basic Detached Buttonhole on Metal Foundation and detached and 2-sided detached elements in Basic Detached Buttonhole with Straight Return. This was a four-day course of stitching instruction. Jane also gave a very interesting lecture and slide presentation on the history of Elizabethan Embroidery with pictures of garments from London museums.
