Celtic Cross by Carol Pederson

This is a labor of love for a great-nephew, to celebrate his ethnic background and his graduation from Yale University (the reason it is blue).

I interpreted a Celtic cross from Teresa Wentzler’s “Celtic Knotwork Crosses” cross-stitch design into Hardanger as the basis of this piece. It is stitched on 32-count Belfast Linen, using Wildflower, Waterlilies and Impressions fibers from the Caron Collection. I added Mill Hill Magnifica beads to one of the crosses, and stone beads to the border.

The open work was doubly challenging. The pattern of partial Greek Crosses and Doves Eyes was intended. However, because the fabric was dyed after it was woven, cutting and wrapping left white thread showing. To solve the problem, I used a toothpick and fabric dye to re-color it.
