Light One Candle/The Very Air Was Gray/Still She Stands

This three-part piece is stitched in a technique I developed to explore color blending. Two layers, each consisting of a single strand of cotton floss stitched in a diagonal double running backstitch, are stitched on perforated paper. The paper can be used as it comes, or colored in some way. I took advantage of the hazy appearance to explore a theme close to all Americans. While the tragedy of 9-11 touched our hearts (The Very Air Was Gray), we still endure as a nation (Still She Stands), and at the same time we have an opportunity to not just "curse the darkness", but to seek truths that will make the world a safer place for all its citizens (Light One Candle).
