Ruby Razzle Dazzle by Ann Strite-Kurz

This design was inspired by a scarf that I saw in the Smithsonian catalog. It was inspired by the Cathedral at Chartres so the transformation is a "second generation" adaptation. I reduced the 16-pane rosette window to a more manageable size and outlined the ovals in my own variation of Jessica stitches to get interlocking shapes. My favorite part of the scarf was the way the four-way bands were arranged without any miters. I used similar pairs of long and short border bands in each corner cluster and rotated them as a block in the same manner. All of the fillings in the design are my own concoctions – all open to take advantage of the dramatic negative space that is provided by the black canvas. The stained glass colors were an obvious choice to reflect the design source as well.
