Autumn Sunset by Ann Strite-Kurz

This piece was inspired by a southwestern sun catcher design. I couldn’t resist the challenge of trying to interpret a complex six-sided figure on a canvas grid, and I was so pleased that I was able to maintain the symmetry of the shapes even though the counts are different for many of the repeats. As a child, I spent many Fall weekends on the Eastern shore of Maryland since my grandfather lived there, so adding a few of the ducks who used this flyway was a "no brainer". This seemed like the ideal finishing touch and I was able to get the "cookie cutter" shapes by bonding five identical patterns to the reverse side of the ultrasuede before I cut them out with cuticle scissors.
