The Gift by Dorothy L. Johnson

The study of ancient language and communication has fascinated me for a long time. This summer I did some extensive research on Ancient Language systems. I was drawn to the Runic Symbolic Alphabet used by the early Celtic and Norse societies during the years prior to 1000 A.D. These cultures are my heritage and I was able to relate to these people's need to communicate and share their ideas. How they expressed their ideas, their creativity and their pride in honorable beliefs.

Work on "The Gift" is meant to be crude and unrefined. I have intended to offer the viewer a fragment of a warrior's shield in the process of being restored. Part of the shield is still darkened with age while the brightest of glass beads keeps shining through. There is a message hidden in the symbols. This stitching is meant to duplicate the unrefined aspects of what might have represented civilization at that time. Warrior's garments and decorated items used in battle displayed little refinement and rudimentary embellishment. This shield fragment might have come from one of the feudal lords or leader of a clan as it has gold threads and beading. Your best means of understanding this piece of work is to use your IMAGINATION!

The specific message is:

  • Possession
  • Wisdom
  • Gift

Hence, The Possession of Wisdom is a Gift!
