Freedom Stands Tall by Lou Kilgore

This piece took me over six months to put down on paper and canvas. The pictures of 9-11-01 were burned into my memory. What made it feel so much closer to home, was the fact that a week before I was all over Washington DC including a number of times past the Pentagon. We watched planes come out of National Airport while at Arlington Cemetery. The act on the Pentagon was almost like a slap at all those heroes laid to rest, a short distant away, in the cemetery. This piece is a way for my children, grandchildren and future generations to remember what our flag stands for. It is worked on gray congress cloth using floss, metallic and overdyed fibers. The flag was applied using transfer paints with the stitching worked over the top, the towers and Pentagon and worked as shadows. After I stitched the piece it didn’t settle the frustrations of the act but reinforced my faith in God knowing that He is in control of all things whether good or bad and those who died did not die in vain.
