Arbor Way by Dorothy L. Johnson

When I moved to South Carolina, we settled on the edge of the Hitchcock Woods in Aiken so that I could walk in the woods as frequently as I wanted. I began to notice that at sunset the trees take on a whole different color vibrancy and energy. This change in color announcing the end of the day is exciting. Shadows become purple, sunrays transmit oranges, reds and rusts. The distant tree trunks become illuminated in subtle ways. The rocks, when hit by sunlight and shadow tones, take on a defined shapes and a life of their own. This beauty of natural elements are frequently overlooked. I have attempted to utilize color, texture and fiber variations in this piece so that the viewer is invited to "take a walk in my woods."

This is one of a series on woods and their specific aspects.
