Designed and Stitched by
Sharon Barrea

Materials:

  • 18-count French Blue canvas - 8" x 8"
  • Stretcher bars - to fit canvas square
  • Medici Wool
    • #8306 (dark brown)
    • #8307 (lighter brown)
  • Kreinik #8 Metallic Braid
    • #032 (iridescent white)
  • DMC Six-Strand Embroidery Thread
    • to match canvas color
  • #22 tapestry needle
  • Refer to Finishing Instructions for materials needed for finishing the ornament.

Trace the oval-shaped template onto the canvas and mount the canvas on stretcher bars as explained in the General Instructions.

Stitch two rows of continental stitch around the outer shape (see General Instructions) using 4 strands of DMC 6-Strand Embroidery Thread (matching canvas color).

Tree Trunk and Branches

Stitch most of the tree trunk in the stem and/or outline stitch using 1 strand of Medici #8306. The stitch does not follow a set count, but is worked randomly in terms of stitch length. This will give the tree trunk character and the look of an old, weathered tree.

Refer to the picture of the ornament to place scattered areas that are stitched with 1 strand of Medici #8307 (lighter brown).

Snow

The tree crotches and the ground immediately surrounding the tree trunk are covered with snow. Use Krienik #8 Braid #032 to depict the snow with French knots.

Step 1 Step 2 Finished Knot

See the finishing instructions to complete the tree as an ornament or as a brooch.
