Designed and Stitched by Sharon Schuber

Materials:

  • 18-count canvas - 6" x 6"
  • Stretcher bars - 6" x 6"
  • 2 skeins Anchor 6-Strand Embroidery Thread (floss) - Color #926 (DMC -- or any stranded thread -- may be substituted for Anchor)
  • Pearl Seed Beads
  • #24 tapestry needle
  • #28 tapestry or #10 sharp or #10 beading needle (for attaching beads)
  • Refer to Finishing Instructions for materials needed for finishing the ornament.

Trace the circle shape onto the canvas and mount the canvas on stretcher bars as explained in the General Instructions.

Stitch two rows of continental stitch around the drawn circle (see General Instructions).

Fill the circle with Criss-Cross Hungarian Stitch using the #24 tapestry needle. This stitch is worked in horizontal rows from right to left and left to right according to the diagram below.  The picture shows a close-up of the stitching,

When you have completed the Criss-Cross Hungarian Stitch, stitch pearl seed beads in the open spaces between the stitch motifs. Thread the small needle with a single strand of Anchor (or DMC), doubling the thread. Bring the needle up, thread on a bead, and work a continental (tent) stitch. See the diagram below on the left. Bring the needle up again in the same hole. Separate the two strands of thread with the needle or your finger. Slide one strand on one side of the bead, the other strand on the other side of the bead and sink the needle as you did for the tent stitch. See the diagram below on the right. This second stitch "sets" the bead so that it doesn't wiggle around, loosen, or otherwise look messy.

Alternate Approaches

  1. You can use threads other than 6-Strand Embroidery Thread.
  2. You can use a metallic or irridescent thread, stitching a tent stitch or a little cross stitch worked over one canvas thread, instead of the pearl seed beads.

Now you're ready for the Finishing Instructions.   Sharon used a hunter green and gold twisted cord that she purchased.
