| 1. Work the Eyelet Variation stitch using Kreinik Metallic Braid #16 Color 006 (#20 tapestry needle). Use a relatively long strand - at least 24"- so that you can complete the stitch motif without beginning a new thread. Start with an away waste knot. In the diagram below, the needle comes up at the edge of the motif, going down in the center hole. The numbers refer to the ORDER of the stitches (first stitch, second stitch, etc.). End your thread length by running the thread through the backs of the eyelet stitches, changing direction at least twice. | ![]() |

Surrounding
Areas
The remainder of the ornament is divided into eight sections that surround the center motif (refer to the photograph of the ornament).
1. Set up the ornament dimensions as follows. Use 3 strands of DMC 6-Strand Embroidery Thread 3846 (#22 tapestry needle) to stitch backstitches, each over two canvas threads. Begin stitching a vertical row of backstitches two canvas threads beyond a top corner of the center motif. Work 8 backstitches toward the top of the ornament then whip the thread through the backs of these stitches to your starting point. Continue the row by working backstitches down the side of the center motif and beyond until the row contains 28 backstitches. Stitch a second vertical row of backstitches on the other side of the center motif.

2. Now follow the same procedure to stitch a horizontal row of backstitches at the top and the bottom of the center motif. You will begin two threads beyond a corner of the center area, stitch 9 backstitches beyond the corner, whip through the backs of these stitches, and continue the row until it contains 28 stitches.

3. Fill in the remainder of the ornament with vertical and horizontal rows of backstitches. Be sure to keep the two canvas threads immediately surrounding the center motif empty.

| 4. The next step is adding the Eyelet stitch. Use Kreinik Metallic Braid #12 Color 006 (#22 tapestry needle). Remember, when working an eyelet stitch (shown at right), the needle goes down in the center hole. Notice that this stitch is not worked in the spaces that separate the sections of the ornament (Refer to the photograph). The diagram below shows the upper center and left sections of the ornament. | ![]() |

5. Use a #10 needle and Nymo beading thread to attach the pink seed beads in the center of alternating eyelet stitches. The diagram shows the bead placement for the top left section of the ornament. Refer to the photograph for placement in the other sections. In addition, attach one bead in the center of the Eyelet Variation motif (center area of the ornament).

6. Work two rows of continental stitch surrounding the ornament using 3 strands of DMC 6-Strand Embroidery Thread 3846.
See the Finishing Instructions for completing the ornament.
