Materials:

  • 18-count canvas - 6" square
  • Stretcher bars - to fit canvas
  • Splendor Silk (Rainbow Gallery) - Color #5830
    You may substitute Au Ver a Soie Soie d'Alger, Needlepoint Silk, or Soie Cristale. You can also use 6-Strand Embroidery Thread (floss).
  • Trebizond Silk (Access Commodities) - Color #212 (Buttercream)
    You may substitute another twisted silk or pearl cotton.
  • Watercolours (Caron Collection) - Color # 027 (Lemon & Lime)
  • #22 and #24 tapestry needles
  • Light colored sewing thread
  • Refer to Finishing Instructions for materials needed for finishing the ornament.

If you change the colors of this ornament, select your Watercolours first, then choose the solid color threads.

Trace the marquis shaped template onto the canvas and mount the canvas on stretcher bars as explained in the General Instructions.

  1. Baste centerlines both horizontally and vertically to find the exact center (use the light colored sewing thread).
  1. Use 1 strand of Watercolours and a #22 needle to stitch a Half-Rhodes Stitch in the exact center. Continue by working a diagonal row of Half-Rhodes Stitch toward the upper left. Then complete the row by working toward the lower right.

  1. Mosaic Stitch - lower half of ornament. First, use 1 strand of Trebizond. Stitch four rows of Mosaic Stitch, stitching in diagonal rows. Now, use 1 strand of Watercolours to stitch one row of Mosaic Stitch. Repeat this sequence to complete the lower half of the ornament.  Refer to photo of finished ornament.

  1. Alternating Cashmere Stitch - upper half of ornament. (For ease in working, turn the canvas upside down.) Use 3 strands of Splendor along with 1 strand of #4 Kreinik Metallic Braid in your needle. Stitch two rows of Alternating Cashmere Stitch, working in diagonal rows. Now, use 1 strand of Watercolours to stitch one row of Alternating Cashmere Stitch. Repeat this sequence to complete the upper half of the ornament. Refer to photo of finished ornament.

  1. Stitch two rows of continental stitch around the outer shape (see General Instructions). Use Trebizond to outline the lower half of the ornament and Splendor to outline the upper half of the ornament.
  2. Finish the ornament according to the Finishing Instructions.
