| Dolores Andrew is an artist and designer, lecturer, judge, and author who creates work in a variety of media in the needle art and fine art disciplines, often depicting the same subject in each discipline. Dolores is NAN certified in teaching, judging, and Honors and was the Director of Judges’ Certification for six years. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Syracuse University and a Master of Fine Arts from Maryland Institute College of Art. Dolores has recently retired as an Associate Professor of Art at Essex Community college in Baltimore County MD. Dolores has written and illustrated three books on textile subjects and is represented by several galleries. Her art work has been accepted in juried exhibitions throughout the U.S. Dawn Donnelly is working on the Teacher cum Laude program and holds Level 2 certification in canvaswork with the National Academy of Needlearts (NAN). She has taught nationally and locally for the American Needlepoint Guild (ANG) and Embroiderers’ Guild of America (EGA). Dawn taught at two of the National seminars that were held in Atlanta and Washington DC. She is currently the Vice President in charge of programs for ANG’s Needlepoint by Night Chapter and a Teacher Certification Counselor for NAN. She enjoys designing and stitching in several mediums using a wide variety of threads and techniques. Toni Gerdes holds Level II Teachers’ certification from the National Academy of Needlearts specializing in canvas embroidery. She is a member of NAN, ANG, EGA, and NETA and has served as vice-president/program chair of The Greater Kansas City Needlepoint Guild. She has received numerous awards for her work including original designs. Toni has taught at the national level for the National Academy of Needlearts and the American Needlepoint Guild, at the regional level for the Embroidery Guild of America, and at the local level at both guild meetings and shops. She enjoys all types of stitching and especially sharing her knowledge with others. She currently resides in Colorado. beve s. handwerger is a Level 11 NAN graduate teacher who specializes in Mixed Media. She is also certified as an Assistant Associate Exhibit Administrator and helps to hang the Exemplary exhibit every year at Assembly. beve is the Artist in Residence for NAN and the first person to complete Teacher Cum Laude. She has had two one woman shows in Annapolis, MD and has taught on the Regiional and National level. Carlene Harwick began stitching at an early age, has been actively participating in needlework since the mid-70s, and began teaching in 1980. She is certified as a teacher and as a judge with the National Academy of Needlearts; she was Director of Judges’ Certification for two terms, and is past Director of Education (President) having completed two terms. She holds Senior Master Teacher credentials with the Master Teacher Program of the American Needlepoint Guild, Inc., is a past-Chairman of the Master Teacher Program, and recently served two terms as the Vice President for Education on the National Board of ANG. She is a Certified Needleart Appraiser, certified by ANG and served two terms as Chairman of the Needleart Appraisal Program (NAP). Carlene was the Chairman of ANG’s new Master Needle Artist Program for two terms (2001- 2005) and is now a Certified Master Needle Artist (ANG-2008), where she was a featured Myrl Good speaker at the ANG seminar in Indian Wells, CA in 2008. She is a Certified Graduate Teacher with Embroiderers’ Guild of America, Inc. and is an evaluator for the program. Lois Kershner is a national, regional, and local teacher, designer, and lecturer specializing in landscape interpretations and Sashiko embroidery. Lois holds a Teacher Certification in Canvas Embroidery from NAN and is NAN’s Director of Teachers’ Certification. PBS TV show, Needle Arts Studio ,author of four books, past owner of retail shop, past owner of
a TV production company. Currently one of the host on the PBS-TV show
Kitting Daily TV.
Shay has studied Japanese Embroidery for over 18 years. She has had the privilege of studying
with four different Sensi (teacher) in Japan. Shay has had the honor to study with Kiju Funkuda,
Living National Treasure of Japanese Embroidery in Japan. She was the driving force in
bringing Japanese Embroidery to the United States and has many students in this technique from
around the world.
Shay was also awarded a Life Membership in the Embroiderers’ Guild of America and awarded a Life Membership in her local chapter of The Embroiderers’ Guild. Marnie Ritter has taught needle art for over thirty years at national and regional seminars for ANG, EGA, Callaway Gardens, Kent State University, NAN, as well as Guilds and shops national and international. Marnie’s forte is to continuously discover new and innovative techniques that combine many facets of needleart. Her students enjoy her enthusiastic sharing of these years of seasoned experience. Her certification in Surface Stitchery from The Council of Embroiderers as well as experience in judging, television and publishing offers a teacher well versed in the subject of needlework. She has served as various officers for the Colorado Chapters of EGA and ANG since 1995. In 2006 she was awarded the honorable Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Academy of Needlearts. Michele Roberts specializes in historical research, stumpwork, and goldwork. She is an EGA Graduate Teacher, a Fiber Forum juried member, an ANG Senior Master Teacher, with Royal School of Needlework Certification with Distinction and Cities and Guilds Certification in Stumpwork. She received the NAN Lifetime Achievement Award in 2010. She has taught at many seminars, including ANG, EGA, NAN, Callaway Gardens, and NAGA, written books, articles, cyberworkshops, correspondence courses, workshops by mail, and won awards in the US and the UK. Carolyn Sherman of Colorado Springs, Colorado, has taught beading and clothing embellishment techniques at many needlework seminars and quilting conferences. These include International Quilt Festival in Houston, TX and The Bead and Button Show in Milwaukee, WI. She has taught at EGA and ANG national seminars, as well as numerous EGA region seminars. Carolyn was inducted into the Colorado Quilting Council’s Hall of Fame in 1991, and received the EGA Rocky Mountain Region “Educators’ Award for Excellence” in 2001. Her quilted landscape of Garden of the Gods was pictured on the back cover of the September 1995 issue of Needle Arts and she was the “Designer Across America” in the summer 2000 issue. Carolyn’s Holiday Brooch was a featured project in the September 2009, issue of Needle Arts. Her current love is designing and teaching dimensional beadwork. Gail Carolyn Sirna is a well known certified embroidery teacher and judge from Rochester, Michigan. She earned her teacher certification from NAN in 1982, and her Judges’ Certification in 1990. She is also a Certified Graduate Teacher in EGA. She has also completed her Honors research with NAN, as well as recently completing Teacher cum Laude. She is author of a book In Praise of the Needlewoman: Embroiderers, Knitters, Lacemakers, and Weavers in Art. Gail has been teaching needlearts for over 30 years. Gail is a former Great Lakes Region Director, and is a past chairman of EGA’s Certified Teacher Graduate Program. She currently serves NAN as its Treasurer. Gail regularly exhibits her work, and has won many ribbons throughout the country. Caela Conn Tyler holds certification in canvaswork, Level II from the National Academy of Needlearts. Caela has taught in Canada and throughout the United States including several national seminars for the American Needlepoint Guild and the Embroiderers’ Guild of America, numerous EGA regional seminars, the Council of American Embroiderers, Callaway School of Needle Arts, and the National Academy of Needlearts. In 2006 she received NAN’s prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award. Although canvaswork is her focus, she works in several media, particularly in garment design and embellishment.
