NAN Establishes the Angel Fund

Any non-profit organization always seems to be in need of operating funds, and NAN is no different. Our biggest deficit occurs in the Exemplary, a very elegant needlework show with stiff competition for the ribbons. Every year it is in the red

There are just endless expenses, biggest of which is the rental of the display boards. These come from a company that supplies conventions and they are very costly. We have no source of free (or even cheaper) boards. Other display properties are purchased from time to time. The paper stock for the name cards and other announcements are also costly, as are the ribbons. We hire two judges each year, and they are paid an honorarium. We try very hard to make sure that the non-NAN judge is also invited to teach, this offsets some of her travel expenses. However, the truth is that the Exemplary is a money pit!

I asked ANG if their exhibit, which is much larger, ever breaks even. The response was rueful laughter -- of the "surely you jest" variety. They have many more entries, four times as many, and even so cannot cover their expenses. Nor can NAN cover their expenses with the Exemplary entry fees.

And yet the board at NAN feels that the Exemplary greatly enhances the participants' experience at Assembly. This is the only exhibit where the majority of entries are originals (now don't let that deter you from entering for there is a non-original category too.) And it enhances the stature of the organization. We are loathe to let it go.

So we have established the NAN Angel Fund so that our members and other benefactors can contribute to the running of the Exemplary. Our very first "need" -- make that "desperate need" -- is for portable lighting. The lights we hope to buy are not terribly expensive but we need many of them, since the exhibit space at the Fairmont has ballroom lighting (think romantic) which is not the best for viewing needlework.

You could buy a light! If you contribute $25, you could be the proud sponsor of a light for the NAN exhibit. Of course, if you want to give more we would be delighted to accept it. And for your donation you will receive an NAN Angel card.
